Is it worth trying to shoot skeet and trap at a range? Seems hard to do with two clays in the air at the same time.

I do it with my one and only shotgun, a Remington 870 express. It's tough, but totally doable and makes you quick running the action.

Most shoot singles in trap, so no disadvantage there, although having a modified choke is helpful. There is a rythem to shooting doubles in trap that works well with a pump, the disadvantage there is lacking 2 barrels for the mod and full chokes usually ideal for each shot. Skeet is a little quicker and closer, but still well within the abilities of a pump and skilled shooter. Sporting clays can have shots that are FAR apart, where you may have an inbound flier hit at 10 yards, and a fast crosser at 50+ yards, so choke settings can be a hinderance for single barrels, you can also have rapid follow ups that can make pumping tough. IMO semis and O/Us do offer advantages, but they are down the list in importance compared to skill, and the angles and distance of the shot, and a good shot behind a pump can make it look easy.

I bust clays all the time with either my Mossberg 500 12 ga. or my Remington 870 Express Mag 20 ga. I have never in my life used a single shot or a double barrel for clays. If you can not pump that thing fast enough to shoot at the second or third clay, then you have not the experience. yet.

If you shoot sporting clays, with an actual trapper, they can throw following pairs that are too far apart to hit with one shot and too close to pump and hit.

But other than that, you can shoot clays (skeet, trap, and sporting) fine with a pump gun.

I have shot trap, skeet and clays with a Remington 870 for over forty years. You will have no problem because, if you shoot enough, you will rack the slide very fast.

If this is your first shotgun, it will be much cheaper than buying a semi auto or over under.

I have a Browning BPS in 28 gauge and I love shooting skeet with it. It's not a gun I compete with, but it's probably my most fun gun to use for skeet. And here's a tip for shooting pairs. Make sure you put back pressure on the pump slide. The when you make the first shot the slide comes back almost automatically. Takes a little practice but shooting pairs is pretty easy. I shoot with a friend who shoots his pump so quickly that you never really see his arm move on the slide. It's just practice.

It's easier (and you get less staring) if you shoot trap/skeet at a range, compared to a car wash facility.

All kidding aside, shooting Trap and Skeet with a pump action shotgun has been done since the invention of pump action shotguns.

    What is a jaw-dropper. . . . . .
My former neighbor owns ONE shotgun. An old Mossberg 500.
The first (and only) time that I've seen ANYONE triple on Dove, was this guy.
That old Mossberg was so 'loose', that when you held the shotgun 'up' and shot, the slide would almost come all the way back, without pulling it!

No bovine scatology. Triple on Dove!!!!!!!

My 870 Wingmaster has worked better for me than any others I have tried over the years. It just fits super. I've had Beretta Trap a Sporting Clays gun but always come back to the 870. Even tried an O/U for awhile.

    Agreed.
Both the 870 and Remington 1100 fit me better than any other shotgun(s).
The Beretta Silver Pigeon is a good fit, but, NOTHING compares to the 870 and 1100.

    :thumbsup::thumbsup:

Several people have mentioned that a particular gun fits better. That is the most important thing. For shotguns, gun fit is paramount.

You can get a gun fitted to you, but if a certain gun fits well, that is easier and cheaper. :)

I have been an NSCA Level 1 Certified Sporting Clays Instructor and an NRA Certified Shotgun Instructor (both are not current).

Thanks for that nice tip from one who plans to use a pump.

The Model 12 has probably broken more clay birds than any other gun...

Best bet OP, buy the pump and when your watching TV, just mount the gun and rack the slide...muscle memory will kick in.
