  • So it’s the same as Everclear but cheaper

In denatured alcohol, they don't typically cut the methanol from the distillation run, so denatured alcohol is going to be 75-85% ethanol and 2-5% methanol. Methanol is the stuff that "will make you go blind". Methanol has a very strong "rot gut" smell and taste.
For sanitizing purposes, it is close enough to Everclear to be used in the same way. Drinking it wouldn't be a pleasant experience, but if someone really needs their booze...

This is becoming a self fulfilling prophecy.

For those of you buying rice and dry beans, stick them in the freezer for a few days to kill any bugs that may be in there.

I'm sure you can physically drink it. It is not recommended.

Yeah, the denatured alcohol has "contaminants" to keep you from drinking it.
To help prevent this, denatonium is often added to give the substance an extremely bitter flavour. Substances such as pyridine are added to give the mixture an unpleasant odour, and agents such as syrup of ipecac may also be included to induce vomiting.
Crap, even the reagent-grade stuff is tainted with methanol ...

Looks like I'm gonna have to stock up on grain and copper sheeting ...

That's good advice. Freezing can kill any weevils or other bugs living in the bags, but won't kill any eggs in the bags.

I transfer mine to mason jars, drop in an oxygen absorber packet, and then vacuum seal the lid on with my Food Saver. That way the living bugs die from a lack of oxygen, and then any eggs that hatch later on are in an oxygen-free environment so the baby bugs quickly die too. Plus the jars are easier to store and move around than bags of beans and rice are.

I buy in bulk and then bake/dry them @ 225f for an hour. They then go into vacuum sealer bags with a desiccant pack. I have beans >5yrs old and the desiccant hasn't started to change color yet.

There are some things that I dry can, and that's how I do it. Pack the jars then put them in the oven at 225 for 90 minutes, then put on the lids and let them self seal. I prefer the vacuum sealing method, but if I don't have oxygen absorbers on hand I dry can instead. Also, for fine powders like flour, dry canning is a better method because the fine powder can clog a vacuum sealer.

Rotate canned goods. I just checked mine. All older that June 2020 are going to be dealt with. Give the panty love. Maybe shouldn't need a virus, but hey it made me look.
