Pre-2013 AR Lower

A friend has owned a Colt Match Target Comp HBAR-II MT6731 since about 2003. His question to me, which I am asking the forum, is whether he can swap out the existing barrel for a non-heavy barrel since he owned the rifle pre-2013?
