A friend who is a former police officer in another state and who subsequently moved to Texas, told me that regardless of where he goes in Maryland and other gun restrictive states, he carries. Not all the time, but when he went hiking or camping in national parks, he never went unarmed.
I told him that if he were caught, it wouldn't be worth it. Not only would he lose his concealed weapons permits, he most likely would lose all of his firearms and the right to buy firearms for the rest of his life.
I've never read any media accounts of anyone being convicted of illegal carry in Maryland, though I'm certain it must happen. I just wondered if anyone either knows anyone who has been arrested and convicted for illegal carry, or knows of someone who has. I only know of two cases, and both were in Washington, D.C. One guy accidentally drove over the Memorial Bridge with a rifle on a rack in his pickup truck; the other guy was on an elevator to his apartment when he was attacked by two guys. He pulled out a Raven .25ACP and shot one of them. Both attackers were arrested, but they fingered the guy who shot at them.
In the first case, it made no difference that the guy took the wrong turnoff and immediately did a U-turn to return to Virginia. He was pulled over by the D.C. Police in Virginia once he'd re-crossed the bridge. He got off with a substantial amount of civic service and I don't recall if he lost his right to possess and use guns. In the second case, the man was smart and contacted the NRA, who represented him and got the charges dropped.
If anyone knows of any Maryland cases or cases in other tough states, I'd be interested in hearing them. I understand it's now legal to carry pepper spray in Maryland. How about tasers?
Thanks!
