I just did the skills class at Thurmont and this would be the first event that fits in my schedule.

Is it a bad idea to do a classifier as my first match? Should I wait until the 28th? Does it matter?

Up to you. I think my first or second match in IDPA was a classifier at TCSC and I qualified Sharpshooter in SSP with a pistol that fits in CCP these days. Even if you don't do well at the first one you will understand what skills you need to practice.

the classifier is actually a great first match. no running around or any of the added pressures of a regular match - just focuses on the fundamentals - advancing, retreating, strong hand only, weak hand only, reloads, shooting around a barricade, etc.
