Old Western Scrounger (home of the MAC-1950) has knocked their Walther P38 price down from $550 to $450. That's the cheapest you'll probably find anywhere. There's also a 10% discount for the next week (til Jan 12 2024)** so one pistol is ~$430 shipped. That's the good news. The maybe not greatest news is these are pretty much bottom of the barrel condition-wise. I went thru all of them and they all appear to be original and not reworked (that could be good or bad) but all have a lot of finish wear and in some cases pitting on the slide and/or barrel. I picked up one to build a shooter and that's probably about all they are good for I think (not really collectible condition). All are C&R eligible and OWS is very MD-friendly for FFL-03's.

yup, they are that... I figure I'll replace the slide with the newer reinforced slide from the parts bin, replace with a forged lock block (also in the parts bin), new springs, reblue the barrel and good to go. Hopefully the bore is decent. Worst case break it down for parts.

I saw the P-38s the other day when I was browsing their stock. It was tempting, but OWS tends to not get the first pick of anything these days. I am, however, VERY interested in a particular British double that they have for sale. Sent an email to find out more about it as they didn't post pictures of the water table or barrel flats on this one like they did for most of the others.

Old Stinky arrived today, quite pleased with it... badly pitted slide which I expected and don't care about since I'm replacing it. Nice shiny sharp bore and the frame and barrel finish is quite nice. Smells moldy/musty and slathered with hardened grease so need to address that but that's the fun stuff. I was pretty careful to try to pick one with a bad slide but good visible finish on barrel/frame and thankfully it worked out. Not sure what these are, since they have both commercial and military/police proofs and an "E" S/N suffix. This one has the E under the finish so it's factory-applied I believe. Usually the E guns are in a S/N range from 00100 to 029000 or so. This one is in the normal serial range for the year (11/59).

The import mark is from CAI and is under the slide.

Miracle of miracles, the "new" reinforced / fat slide dropped right on nice and tight, and the decocker and safety work without any tweaking. Here it is with the upgraded slide installed. I had this in the parts bin as a complete slide, it has some wear on it that goes perfect with this pistol. I also have some NOS stripped slides but I'd have to transfer parts to complete one.

The import mark is a heck of a lot better than this horrid CAI one defacing a super-rare variant:

This can't be the original guy who started the company can it? I knew him years ago after he left RCBS and started his new venture. Maybe it is his son? Now if only I could remember his name. :banghead:

Indeed it is. Story is that about 80 of them were mixed in with a shipment to CAI, who didn't recognize them for the rarity they were. Most, if not all, of the others were destroyed.
