I have an older 870 express that is at least 20 and maybe close to 30 yrs old given to me by my dad. It has survived most of its life on the shore (humidity), wildfowl hunting, skeet, trap and sporting clays. It does not have a spec of rust on it that I can find and I don't think it has ever been detail stripped. I honestly cannot complain about its performance in any way. In fact, compared to semi-auto trap guns, it has substantially more reach. I've busted many a clay bird outside of ranges that experienced trap guys would not even take the shot. If you practice racking the action, you can get quick enough to do just fine on doubles.
I don't know how the newer models compare, but I will never replace mine.
