    By and large, rank and file officers aren't in favor of these restrictions any more than the rest of us. It's the upper ranks ( mostly appointed chiefs and such ) who will support this because they fear for their cushy appointments.

    Police Chiefs of major metropolitan areas are appointed and if you step on toes you get railroaded...ehem see Baltimore. Its hard to say which position is more political since most Sheriffs have to get elected. If I had to say which is the bigger sell out is the Police Chiefs, since they may have to do things contrary to their beliefs to get and keep a job.
