now that I am on the downhill side of my first NFA waiting period....I need another. I guess I can thank you for that! haha

It sets in quick. Soon you'll want to have a constant stream of stamps. The waiting is so much easier that way :-)

I have an HK94 that I want to SBR. I'm familiar with Form 4's and have several but I've never filed a Form 1. Do I still need to go to Pikesville and get a MD signoff? Or can I just file the Form 1 with the ATF and skip the MD hassles?

yep. I added the form to my post so you can look on the back.

There are however other requirements like engraving the receiver and such.

I've been MIA for a couple of months, I take it MSP is still deciding whether or not SBRs are allowed or not.

I seem to recall some people making the point that in the law, SBRs are pistols -yet have never been treated as such by MSP- and as such they're not "assault" long arms and not covered by the Oct 1 law. If this is the case, does it not also throw out the minimum length of 29 inches?

Yes. The argument would be that SBRs are not Assault Long Guns, and are not subject to the Copycat Weapon tests, which apply to Semiautomatic centerfire rifles.

Well, here's to hoping, as I really want one of these:

Close. The argument would be that SBRs are not rifles, since they're defined differently in MD code.

I did 5 eform 1's on 10/1 and 10/2 using a trust, 3 of them were under 30", I've always been under the belief that sbr's in MD are in a different category from normal rifles and apparently the atf does to. Now with everybody emailing the msp to clarify things :sad20: I suspect they're probably going change that opinion.
You're reading this situation wrong. The BATFE simply knows that MD hasn't banned SBRs entirely. They are not in a position to legally vet every SBR you submit to them, nor does the form even provide the information to do so. That is to say, it's entirely possible in some states to manufacture a banned rifle that is approved by the BATFE... it's still a banned rifle.

We need verifiable information from someone that submitted an SBR for MSP sign off after 10/1. MSP seems to be in a huge gray area. What are they going to do if a bunch of Form 1's go through the ATF on trusts while they screw around with eventually getting us their interpretation? They've had long enough. Personally I don't see how they can just change their mind on how they classify SBR's, but then again I tend to use logic.
