-The Mauser 1914 I won at auction last month arrived today and I'm stunned that whomever was bidding against me dropped out so soon, giving me a wonderful bargain. Not a common experience these days.
-This Mauser was one of about 10,500 built immediately after the rare "Humpback" was discontinued. Only about 2800 Humpbacks were produced and the SNs ran uninterrupted so this example was one of the first Early Production models built. More impressive when you consider that approx. 450,000 std model 1914s were built.
-What makes it different from all the 1914s that follow was a ramped front sight, milled right panel and two line address.
-The original high polish finish only has minor wear near the SN on the left side of the slide. Otherwise the finish is 99 points. Fire blue is totally intact on the trigger, extractor and take down latch. Left grip has minor compression and the right grip a bit more.
-Full numbers matching with a pristine bore. No export mark, almost certainly a bring back. This one was rarely shot and well cared for. Sports the correct slotted magazine with square floorplate.
-An unusual leather holster came with it. Something I've yet to definitively ID. Has a homemade look and feel to it so I might never get an answer as to who built it and where.

Think I was lucky that there was a Kriegsmarine marked Mauser 1934 in the same auction, listed behind this 1914. Perhaps bidding was light as everyone wanted to save their coin for a shot at the 1934. In any case it was a shock to me that I got it so cheap. So much so that I worried that there was something drastically wrong that the auction catalog couldn't show that scared live bidders away. Thankfully that wasn't the case.
This one begs for a better holster. Time to keep an eye out for a proper WWI era example.
