A 7.62 is NOT cheap to shoot, especially a semi. IMHO if you want a .308 get a NICE Precision Bolt Gun. Remington 700 or a Savage.

There is no "Standard" for .308 AR's or Piston AR's. I would avoid them as there is no standard and all parts are NOT compatible. Don't buy into the "AR Piston Hype" its complete bullcrap.

SCAR H is a decent gun but way overpriced and parts are not readily available.

FNAR is a fantastic gun and superbly accurate but a complete PAIN IN THE ARSE to strip/maintain.

IMO if you want a Semi get a nice HBAR (D.I.) AR in 5.56. Parts are available everywhere and caliber changes are a breeze, mags are standard and readily available and they suppress well.

As AR's go the AR-10 is unique to the maker most times and customization is a crap shoot whether you can find parts that match. If you just want a range gun to touch the target at 30 yards then get a bolt action. I suggest Savage as for 700-1000 you can get a GREAT rifle.

If you are stuck on semi auto then your only choice is AR-10 but that doesn't mean you don't have choices. There are calibers to consider.

Also you could get your HBAR config for an AR-15 and build/purchase a .300 AAC system. It's 7.62 lead in a 5.56 platform. The ammo is expensive but dropping fast as people start adopting it.

If you're not set on semi, 2A had a BEAUTIFUL Sig 308 bolt rifle around that price range. Yes, a Sig bolt. Sorry, I don't know the model number, Mark told me but I was in too much of a trance looking at it.

Second vote for the SKS. Hard to put optics on without replacing the stock but fits all your other qualifications. Cheap ammo too.

You can get a damn nice one for 5-600 bucks and have plenty of cash left for ammo, a barrel threading job, new stock if you want it, etc.

Any strong feelings about the Sig 716?

I have one and I love shooting it. It's better than I am with the included flip up iron sights to 100 yards when by vision starts to get crap. I just got a Nikon Prostaff for it and can't wait to try it.

The receiver is so, so clean even after being fired :). The buffer fits mil spec ar15 stocks (or at least it fit the extra m400 one I had lying around, and magpul because that was an option on some). The magazine is the sr25/dpms type for which Magpul makes a PMAG (this was a HUGE selling point for me). It has QD sling points like, everywhere.

My ONLY complaint so far is that the model with the Sig Sauer stock (not the magpul one) doesn't feel quite right on my face.

I have an irrational brand loyalty for Sig Sauer though... I've loved my 226, M400 and 716 since I laid eyes on each respectively.

I am also looking for a .308 cal semi for my next piece. I love my Colt AR15 but now want to punch a bigger hole. I was looking at Sig 716 (Had bad trigger review but love Sig), S&W MP10, and Ruger SR762. This is new learning curve for the AR10 style field.

Go to Engage Armament. They have unbelievable custom HBARs, and can talk to you about caliber selection as well.

Building a 308 is kind of a crap shoot. Not absolute standard on components and in most cases the upper receiver assembly will need bought whole and modified post as pieces come available.

If you want .308 punch with standardized systems then a .300 AAC system is ideal. It runs on the AR-15 standard lower and upper. The only real modification to support the .300 AAC round is barrel. That said if you already have an AR-15 you can buy the parts for an upper receiver and mount the .300 AAC barrel.
