I'm trying to pick an optic for my Larue OBR. Around here, most of the shooting will be 300 yards or less, so I don't need a long-range scope, but do need a good general-purpose scope.

    What I'm considering are:

    Nightforce NXS 1-4x
    U.S. Optics SR-6C 1.5-6x
    Vortex Razor HD 1-6x
Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10x (I can get a really good deal on this)
    Leupold Mark 4 1.5-5x

    Opinions?

I have the Vortex Viper 2.5 - 10, not a PST though ... nice clear scope. Mounted on a Burris PEPR

That's what I have and vote for. A great scope

I have looked through 3 on your list: NXS, Razor and Viper PST
I would pick the Vortex Razor...nice glass and a bit more magnification.
NXS is nice and compact but it is expensive for 1x4 scope. A friend has one and he wants more magnification.

I have Viper PST 2.5-10x44 on a bolt gun. No complaints for the money.

Euro optic currently has a good deal on Steiner Military 1x4. A bit heavy but a great value

Vortex might be coming out with a new 1x8 this year if you can wait.

The razor HD gets my vote. On 1x it is as fast as a red dot. On 6, hits to 600 yards are easy.

Another option for the same money as the Razor is the Primary Arms 1-8. It has been getting pretty great reviews from guys that owned Swarovski Z6-i's and Razors.

No offense. But, the OP will probably spend 3x what your UTG costs on rings. You might have great luck with that scope but it won't hold up to hard use. By hard use I mean would you go to war with it?

I started out with $299 to $400 scopes that I wouldn't trust to withstand field use.

Some of them didn't even survive a fall off the bed onto a carpeted floor while on the rifle...

if price is no option, the leupold.

Sorry I have to disagree. If $$ (or should I say $$$$$$$$) is no option my vote is to the USO hands down. The only brand I don't personally own is the Vortex (my friend uses them though). The USOs are absolutely bomb proof. Guys in my unit have had issues with Leupold lately but they CS is great and they have either repaired or replaced any defective units. NF has very high end optics and for the price that's what I would buy but again if I had an unlimited budget US Optics gets my money.

At the very high end, guys are selling their Schmidt and Benders for the Vortex Razor II scopes now out. :)

It's amazes me how many guys skimp on optics, buy a 1k rifle and attach a $80 scope... The craziest part is when they recommend said $80 scope in a thread that's discussing mid to high-end optics, mindbogglingly..........

I haven't played with a Razor HDII, but I have spent a few minutes behind S&B PMII and it was nice.

A number of people over on Sniper's Hide shot both and sold their S&B.

Based on this, if I do another long range rifle, it will probably get a Razor HD II.
