What did you use to strip the old finish?

I use Acetone with steel wool, then sand paper 80 grit, then 120 grit. I used an orbital sander on the larger areas (gently, not too much pressure). Then sanded the sharper curves by hand. After I think I'm done sanding I wipe it down with acetone, it will show up any scratches made by the sanding, if I see some ill sand that area again and repeat with acetone till I can't see any sanding marks. Acetone works better for cleaning bare wood than mineral spirits cause it evaporates a lot quicker.

Do you use some kind of stencil to do those designs, or is that freehand? Either way, amazing work!

I printed out the designs off the PC, then traced the image with a soft leaded pencil. then flip it over and rub it on stock. The scroll work was free hand, and the shading on the eagle was freehand. The vine leaves are made using a broad tip applied in a certain way.
