Are you sure it was c&r? The original F/A ones would be, but those aren't exactly cash&carry.

Perhaps it's a S/A conversion? In which case it'd probably work with a simple NICS check as a long gun.

I've had that issue myself. I make it a point NOT to go there until AFTER the morgage has been paid for the month.
