So, I was looking to get a hold of a 556 AK, and I checked the MSP site just to be sure... and behold as of June 2023, they have banned the AK556 from Palmetto State because of the wording on the PSA website. Now, the wording is not stated in the AK 101 from PSA, and the 101 is also not on their listed of banned rifles.. but damn that is nice for them to ban it because a bunch of dudes decided if it says it's an AK, it's an AK. I say some folks are idiots, so that must mean, they are idiots.

No criminals are ever harmed (or even hampered) by ”gun control.”

    Sadly, thats by design.

Even sadder, so many cannot see it.
I am just shocked no one has raised a stick about this. the AK 556 says it is designed that way by PSA, but functionally it is very different. I wonder if PSA just removed the wording and the MSP would go back to ignoring it.

So MSP will ban my banana if I call it a boom boom? With what fine investigative techniques and means does our illustrious MSP use these days?

Some here want to defend them because they are a LEOA, to your own 2A demise. They are no better then the charlatans and thieving revenue collectors in Annapolis who keep them on their leash to control and enslave this state’s occupants.

MSP are the states plantation overseers and slave catchers serving at the masters wish. Marylands defiance of the Constitution will never stop until either they are voted out or the complete conversion to socialist control has taken place.

The only saving grace now is a Constitutional decision from SCOTUS.

The other possibility is they are looking for ANY excuse to ban these guns and found one.

I wouldn’t read THAT much into this. My read is that this is just someone in the Firearms Division who did sloppy research. MSP makes bad determinations and then changes their mind all the time. An example being when they declared that the H&K MR556 (and other 416 clones) were banned based on a 2-minute Google search, until someone pointed out to them that it’s a piston AR that is not fully interchangeable with the banned AR models. Then they changed their determination.

This latest determination can almost surely be appealed if someone is willing to argue about it with them. The common sense read of FSA 2013 has been that only 7.62x39mm AK rifles are banned.

I could be reading too much into it for sure (would not be the first time). But an activist running amok (even knowing it gets overturned) is not unheard of.

True. My impression from reading other posts on this forum that most people who have dealt with MSP have found their officers to be reasonable and helpful, but also overworked and at times incapable of giving issues proper attention. I suspect this is one of those times. The Reviewed Firearms List on their web site is full of determinations that they’ve reversed based on faulty initial reviews.

    Two things.
    1. The "Rifle List" has absolutely no force of law, with the exception of the 45 named long guns/shotguns in state statute. All other "banned" long guns are at the opinion of MSP that carries no force of law.
    2. You can challenge that I believe, if not you an FFL should be able to. Under State Statute, and current AG Definition, a copycat does NOT equal what the definition of a firearm is on a manufacturer's website.

that is a fair assessment, and I do agree they are overworked. I should have clarified my frustration towards the people who wrote the law and not the people who enforce it. However, I am trying to learn how to appeal it, and I see that some are recommending I go through an FFL. Do you happen to know if there is a different route, that I as a citizen can do or is it best through the FFL?

Methinks you give them way too much credit.

Dunno, I’m mostly going by what I’ve read. My only experience dealing with them was when I moved here and submitted my 77R to register my handguns. I do think that the evidence on their web site speaks for itself.

Have to admit that I don’t know. I would really go through an FFL who knows the process. I was just at Engage Armament yesterday, and they told me that they’re working on appealing MSP’s determination on the Daniel Defense MK12. Maybe talk to them?

So it is banned because the website describes it as an AK (which is banned), regardless of what it actually is, right?

Unpopular opinion: Isn't that like us saying an AR (or upper or barrel) is not banned because the website describes it as HBAR, regardless of what it actually is?

I'm sure PSA will help us out ;)

I really hope this doesn't screw up the legality of the Zastava M90 NP, which looks like an AK but isn't in an AK caliber and doesn't use AK mags.

Does that surprise you in a state where if you tie two hot dogs together with dental floss you have created illegal-to-carry nunchucka?
? Is there a max length for components to be considered a nunchuck assembly if made from a sausage? Or diameter?
