I'm looking at a Mossberg 500 for HD. I think I'm settled on a 20" barrel vs the 18.5". The extra capacity in the extended tube isn't a big deal, but I figure the 1.5" length is even less of a difference. (Feel free to share you opinion on this).

However, I'm confused by all of the options. I know I can go to BPS and buy a 500 for cheap and buy replacement parts, but a short barrel and maybe new furniture is going to be more than just buying a ready-made HD version.

For example, persuader vs a "regular" 500? The Persuader looks like it sometimes comes with a short fore-grip, or a tri-rail on the foregrip. Are there any other differences?

Any reason I should get a Persuader over say, this one?

Which seems nearly identical to this one:

    Persuader with tri-rail:

Or if I want 18.5" inches, should I just buy this?

I know 500/870 threads are common, but usually they are debating which brand to go with. I have an 870 already, but want a 500. (870 is a slug gun)

    Thanks in advance.

If you already own an 870 ,id buy another just so you have common parts /barrels....you never know when a deal will come along and having multiple barrels and options would make things easier. I had my Mossberg shotgun tapped for remchokes so my 870s,1187 and 930 all take the same chokes.

I got a Mossberg 500 combo I really like. Came with 18&28 inch barrels. Buds has a 20 inch 8 shot Maverick 88 for 232 as opposed to the same Mossberg for 332. The only difference is the safety location.

For home defense take a look at this one. You can get them for about $425-$450. I think The Gun Shop had one in stock last week. Stick with the 18.5" barrel. It holds (5) 2-3/4" shells in the tube. Adjustable stock, but also with the pistol grip.

I really like that. My buddy has an 870 with a similar stock and grip. I like the idea of a regular pistol grip, but I think I prefer to have the shoulder stock like this one.

If you are not set on a Mossberg, you can get a NEF Pardner pump protector or Norinco 982 18" barrel for less than 200. Copies of the 870 so you are familiar with the buttons.

Picked up a used 500 with collapsible stock and 18.5" barrel today. Thanks everyone for your input.
