One sort of good thing- not only were they accepting guns and ammunition, they were accepting expired pyrotechnics- so I turned in all my long expired marine flares (I keep the recently expired ones as backups) at the Annapolis PD. I had barely gotten out of the vehicle when an Officer came out to me. Saw one other vehicle enter the parking as I was leaving. An older couple. Swung around the circle and saw the Officer carrying a case presumably containing a long gun and a gym bag or satchel. No idea what was in it. No opportunity to approach the couple. But they (APD) didn't appear to be swamped with turn ins.

Instead of making a big production out of it Gansler could just allow firearms to be turned in any time at a MSP barracks with no questions asked. That doesn't really make for a good press event though I guess.

    Juuuuust over the line
TV news tonight showed a table with today's massive haul - all 5 of them. One pistol, two almost flintlock looking things (which I obviously didn't recognize) and a couple of shotguns. They said that was it, state wide.

Good! What asshats. I mean after the showing gun owners made during our protests of SB 281, did they really expect a big turnout, especially when they weren't doing an actual buy back?

We need to put our own spin on this

We need to start writing to newspapers and pols and telling them that this "no questions asked" turn in probably allowed criminals to dispose of weapons used in crimes. Now they face less chance of getting convicted for those crimes.

We can make Owe Malley the criminals best friend. :D

Just more ammunition, pardon the pun, for 2014. Just sayen :innocent0

......and that would minimize their opportunities to do their own spin on how "successful" the turn-in was......

Hagerstown Police said they received 2 handguns, 1 rifle and a pellet gun

HAGERSTOWN, MD - The first annual Gun Turn-In Day took place Saturday. The statewide event had a drop-off at the Hagerstown City Police Department. Residents could drop off their unwanted guns at the police department with no questions asked.
Only four guns were turned in at the Hagerstown Police Department.

Despite the small number of guns turned in, city police say they are not disappointed. Other counties in the area participating in the drop offs were Allegany County and Garrett County.

From our local Southern Maryland news source: http://smnewsnet.com/archives/63357
When asked about citizens offering to buy the guns from people wanting to turn them over to MSP, First Sergeant Bolger said “in other jurisdictions, where gun turn-in day was held before, people would set up shop across the street from the participating barracks with large signs stating they were offering cash for the weapons”, and he said “that was okay as the purchaser could bring them right into the barracks and legally register them right then and there”.
In St. Mary’s County at Barrack T, seven long guns and two handguns were turned over to the officers. There was no Gun Turn-in Day at MSP Barracks H in Charles County.

Anyone have an idea of what was turned in at Westminster? I saw no mention in the Times either yesterday or today. Just curious, my gut says epic fail...

    This is laughable.

FFL's have nothing on their shelves. Their safes are crammed with sold firearms awaiting MSP not denied.

The fool Gansler thinks that folks are going to turn in firearms?

I was at the MG fairgrounds during the gun turn in day and didn't see anything. It was a big place and I was at the other end of the property but I only saw one small sign indicating the turn in location. It was partially hidden by the flea market signs as well. It was as if the police didn't even want to bother with it.

One odd thing to note was that they had people doing their community service obligation (i.e. court order) helping set up the flea market and stuff. So people convicted of minor offenses milling around a gun turn in location. Probably not a well thought out idea.

I can only tell you what I saw from the short time I was across the street. What I saw were what appears to be 2 hand guns and 3 long guns. If they do another one I suggest some of us get together with signs and see if we can walk away with a few. I honestly didn't think they would allow me to be across the street or else I would have at least had a sign saying "Cash for you gun with legal transfer" or something to that affect.

Maybe the police weren't disappointed with the small number of guns turned in because they realize better than many what a useless effort it is, or they don't personally support gun turn ins, or they were just happy that the amount of paperwork they had to do was minimal.
