I've wanted a big caliber like 45/70 for a while. I want to know if anyone has a Marlin lever action and if they like it or would recommend another gun. thanks

I have the Cowboy in that caliber. I LOVE it. I just wish it wasn't $1.50+ a round.

Even my wife likes it. It nearly jumped out of her hands the first shot, but she got a hold of it for the next two (I cut her off. I only had one box)

Check out the lever action porn thread for pictures of it and others like it.

I had a Marlin 45/70back in the late 70's, early 80's. I traded some other stuff for it, got a great deal, and sold it about 8 years later. It was nice. See through mounts with a 4X scope. I took it hunting once. Only shot the thing three times.
Another one I should have kept.

I have 3 Marlin lever guns and I'd love to add a 45/70 one day. They're fine weapons.

Great Rifle. Stay away from the MicroGroove barrels and stick with the Ballard Rifling, especially if you want to shoot lead.

Learn to reload and the cost of ammo won't be so bad. 45/70 can easily be loaded on a single stage and some old timers have been known to use a hand press.

Lead works just fine with the micro grooves, even with black powder behind it. Just find some .459 sized bullets and your g2g.

I have a Marlin 1895GS 45/70. Great gun. I enjoy shooting it. So far it has been very accurate with Hornady Leverlution 325gr ammo.

don't have the lever gun YET, but I do have a rolling block (repo) and a T/C contender in 45/70 . its a fun caliber to play with for nice easy loads I started loading with trailboss powder.

Have to ageee to disagee. Even with really hard lead, the MGs foul and clog easier than the Ballards.

Also from a HTH personal comparisson, the Ballard is more accurate than a MG but that IMHO and YMMV.

Still a great round and I want that SBL model.

Yep, we can agree to this. There has been so much written about ballard vs micro groove rifling that virtually every opinion on it seems to have a following.
I'd say that many people won't really notice a difference if you don't tell them before and as with every gun, you gotta work it out for yourself.

Had the MG and got one of the first Ballards. Sold the MG about 2 weeks later after my HTH test.
