What was there in the article that indicated he was breaking any laws?

DFC Mark Fitzgerald found the driver to be in possession of a handgun and rifle.

He arrested James Aaron Smith, 31 of Lusby, and charged him with transporting a handgun in a vehicle on public roads.

...last time I checked, "transporting a handgun in a vehicle on public roads" isn't a violation of any state law. Transporting a LOADED handgun, without a permit, yes.

Didn't they open up a gangland shooting gallery in the ranch club, a while back?

Happens from time to time...this place was (and can still be) the wild west a few decades ago...they are still finding bodies. Lets see....ranch club was opened back in the 60s or so and has a private airport (still active)....can anyone say drug running?

Nope, loaded or not it is still a violation . . . unless you fall within the "Exceptions" (going to/from a range, gunsmith, MSP barracks for a transfer, etc.)

My grandmom was one of the first to move in the hood back in the day. Until she died her dues were $10. My dad was telling me that the club house used to be an arcade of sorts, the gun range was at the horse shoe pits, and the lake used to be clean. I'm half tempted to run down to the horseshoe pit with a metal detector. I used to live in a fairly new house I was renting in between 2 drug houses, one guy overdosed and then there was one drug house.
