Used Winchesters, JM Marlins, and Savages can sometimes occupy that nexus of reasonable price ($400 and higher), perceived quality, and practical utility.

It's really a Glock v Walther v Sig v HK v CZ question that you pose - there is no right answer and a lot depends on personal preference and planned use.

For new, Browning, Winchester (made in the same Japanese factory as Browning), and Taylor/Uberti might be considered higher end these days, closely followed by Henry. But Chiappi, Rossi, and present day Marlin are also turning out desirable and often quality lever action rifles.

Of calibers, if you don't reload, pistol caliber might be both fun and more affordable to source ammo.

The Trails End Winchesters probably have the best overall fit, finish, manufacturing. The Remington Marlins certainly are a step down from what they used to be, but still fairly good. Henry has some really well made guns, and their line is much broader than the .22s, yellowboys etc they started out with, probably better fit and finish than what Marlin is making these days.

Rossi, hit or miss, they usually work with a little massaging. They will never win beauty contest but when put together and handle well.

Remember, Lever guns were designed to be tools, that's what they are. They are not precision guns, they are working guns, so a blemish here or there or rough machining is not the end of the world.

    1953 Savage 99

Picked up this 300 Savage from Bluefins at the Timonium show. Walked past it and looked twice and ended up with it. It is one of the most common calibers but I have not seem one this clean in a very long time. Thanks again MOPAR.

She's purdy. Love the combination of elegant lines with a robust action in the Savage 99. Like how you got a foot substitute in the shot. ;)

I have 2 marlin JM 1894s in .44 magnum I may be throwing up for sale. 1 blue, 1 stainless. Have a friend who is looking to sell his scar 17. I'm still up in the air about it?

Anyone have an opinion on BLRs ?
Browning guy, if he logs in, is one of the obvious experts on the topic. I have one. Belgian made that shoots 308. Beautiful rifle that I won't give up despite the hard to find mags (I have 3 thus far). The Belgians are thought to have more lustrous bluing, whereas the recent Japanese made ones might exceed them in mechanical precision. My Belgian shoots 2 MOA with a bit of a kick given the lightweight platform. Like Marlins, the BLRs, in my opinion, look natural when scoped, and are certainly set up to do this more easily than more classic lever actions.

I know I have no use for one, but one of those 81 lightweight in stainless keeps calling out to me.

This thread reminds me that I should make a point to have some pro-ish photos done of my lever guns.

For now, these will have to do - I'm not sure if I posted them before in this thread or not, but I don't think there'd be any harm in adding them again. :D (I've also got an old Marline 1893 from somewhere around 1906-1910, but I don't have any pics of it - it's definitely a rifle that's seen better days, but it's also a family gun that got a lot of use on a farm in Nebraska.)

I have a friend who has been looking for a Marlin 1984 in .357 for a while. He may be interested in a 44 mag.

not many of them were made. They were made for the SHOT show for 1 year. I've read that only 500 were produced, I've only seen one other and it was in .410.

i saw a melonited marlin guide gun in .45-70 that was just beautiful.

Supposedly it was for salt water protection, and I am sure it worked wonders, but it was just so damn lustrous and silky
