I bought these two JM marked 1895s in .45-70 two years ago off Gun Broker.
The blued one was lightly used, The stainless one came from Alaska and it had never been fired. It came in the Marlin box with all the tags and stickers still attached.

    Marlin Marlins - Not Remlins.

I paid way less than 1/5th what this 30-30 went for.

I don't get it......No way that gun is worth 1/5th that price (except to the guy who bought it)
    Are those Skinner sights?

Yes. Skinner Alaskan on the Stainless 1895 and Skinner Express on the blued one. They did not come that way, I added them.
I'm a member of the "Lever Action Rifle and Skinnersights Group" on Facebook - not because I have Skinner sights on anything, but because I love lever action rifles. I think Skinner sights look fantastic, and they're clearly very functional, but I don't really have a rifle I'd be willing to put them on - all of my lever guns are old and/or collectible.

No doubt you enjoy them a great deal - the guys on the FB group all seem to love theirs.

Made a case holder for the stock holds 5 rounds and currently working on a sling. Anticipate range time in a couple of weeks. It came with a nice hard case too. Also, came with a 1-person 5-day 3 animal African safari.

Pulled 2 of my other levers out of the back of the safe the other day. Both Winchesters. Bought new for $299 in 1996 9422M. Still have the original box and paperwork. The other is my Model 88 in 308.

I've been keeping my eyes open for one of these from this timeframe for a while to replace the one that I used as a kid that got sold at the auction for my Dad's stuff. The problem with the 39A is that almost no one ever wants to sell them - it's the Cadillac of 22 rifles. The only other one that even comes close, IMO, is the Winchester Model 1890, but personally I believe it falls short of the 39A.

I've got an 1890, but it's in pretty rough shape - I wish I could find a period-correct barrel for it because the barrel that's currently on it is an unmarked octagonal generic barrel. It shoots well, but it would be nice to have one with the Winchester markings.

That's a nice collection you have there.

Cheers. It wasn't an overnight thing. My 1890 is from waaay at the tail end of production from 1939-40ish. It matches and I think I only paid like $200 for it. My 39A was a "tweaker find" for lack of better terms. Guy's dad died and I got a bunch of guns for like $50 each...this was the best of the bunch and I sold the rest.

Wow. Why can I never stumble into deals like that?

My 1890 dates to 1913, and I'm fairly certain it was a family gun purchased new, and used around the farm. I'm not sure what happened to the original barrel, but this one is a generic sterile/unmarked barrel that was likely set to fit either an 1890 or 1906 because it has a separate dovetail that isn't being used. I've never seen another 1890 like that - I'm not saying they aren't around, only that I've never seen one with a similar barrel.

For that matter, I'm not sure if the 1890 and 1906 were different when it came to barrel length and dovetail placement - I'm taking a SWAG at it.
