Kyle is probably the most recent, relevant retiree of the spec ops community. I think he just got out less than a year ago.
This 17 minutes with him speaking on EDC should be mandatory in every class everywhere.
Everyone here (unless you hate experts and influencers) needs to watch this and enable their brains.
Carry hot and don't put shit on your ankles.
Just so many take aways from this short video.

This was indeed an informative watch. One of the better interviews Shawn has done in my opinion. Shawn’s intro seemed a bit odd to me when he told the viewers this guy was basically “scatter brained” (my words, not his). Boy was he correct, for over 5 hours Kyle was, as Shawn put it, struggling to complete thoughts and a bit all over the place. Illustrating how hard it’s been for him to transition back and bringing so many (recent) traumatic events up in such vivid detail. My heart ached for the guy, our country owes that man and his family a debt of gratitude that is doubtful we could ever pay. Very interesting video, but not a smooth and easy viewing by any means. Thanks for the recommendation.

    Great video.

Not the most important part of the 5 hour interview...and yes, I made it through the entire thing. His recall of the assault on the hotel should be listened to as well. The dark side, his OD and drug habit, should also be listened to. Folks want to carry the gun, but don't always consider the consequences or responsiblities that may come with it.

Everyone wants to be a gangsta (or operator) until it's time to do do gansta (or operator) shit. You will carry that weight.

It's cool he gave Shawn a hinge from the door. Shawn has been putting out great stuff for a while. It's interesting Morgan went with a delta point pro instead of a rmr. It was cool that I chose a g43xmos w/ holosun k series and he did too for similar reasons. It confirmed some of my reasons for the choice over a doublestack with a short grip.

There is a thread on MDS where a member is being roasted for saying that if he pulls his gun out, somebody is getting shot. Delta homeboy said the same thing. I’ve always felt this way as well.

Dude may not be used to acting in a non-mil role. I get the mindset, but "only a Sith speaks in absolutes."

Imagine if Andy from Engage had trained with him and then they play this video at his trial. A guy with PTSD and substance abuse problems who advises people "if I draw, I'm shooting."

Is he certified by the Force Science Institute? I'm guessing no.

I've trained with 3 ex-Delta guys and 2 ex-DevGru guys. All seem to have made a better transition to training civilians. I certainly never heard advice like that.

I like that in the video he talks about the importance of getting your head right before carrying a gun. In Dave Spaulding's excellent book, Handgun Combatives, the chapter on mindset comes first, long before grip and stance and the mechanics of shooting.

If you are not going to shoot, don't draw. A firearm is not a tool of de-escalation, it is the tool of last resort.

I get the statement, it just doesn't account for possible realities. If the bad guy drops their weapons or throws their hands up, his "draw and kill" theory certainly will have legal challenges.

I'm guessing the mindset is that every other possible solution has been tried and lethal force is the only option. Don't pull the gun to be a threat, but to end the threat. However; that likely won't play well in real life in many situations.

If someone has a pistol drawn on you, you don't "draw on the drop". If you're not drawn and someone drops the weapon then you don't need to shoot them. Right?
If someone throws their hands up when you're not drawn on them, then who knows what's going on with them.

If the threat is drawing (not drawn)and I have determined I can make the shot before you do, then that's the (if I'm drawing my weapon, then I'm going to kill you) moment. People need to know their "go time".
    That's what the statement means.

No one isn't saying you can't cheat by preloading your hand position or whatever. But if you're drawing, that means every other part of your avoidance plan didn't work and you shoot as your last resort.

This is why training and mindset is important.

But yours is the police officer mindset and that's fine. I've been there.
But things are different out here when you don't have a duty to the rules of a badge anymore.
There's no duty to de-escalate a situation or talk someone down, negotiate with someone to "drop the weapon", etc...
There's situation avoidance and reaction to a threat. That's it.
