Just arrived today, hope I'm not too late to the party:innocent0
Dated 1954, stock is in pretty good shape. This is after Murphy's Oil soap, and then some Butchers Wax.
Matching stamp on barrel, magazine plate, and butt plate. Not the bolt.
Barrel is nice and clean, and it has a smoother action than my 91/30's.
No sling, cleaning rod, or accessories.
Overall, I'm extremely pleased with the quality, she cleaned up nice.
Sorry for the crappy pic...I haven't figured out how to post more than 1 pic in a post on my phone

Murphys is that what you guys recommend?

2 out of 7 had matching numbers.

Some had notches carved in the stock? Confirmed kills?

I got the Murphy's tip from reading this forum
Personally, I love the look as they are. So much character and history. Refinishing one would feel blasphemous lol.

I use Murphy's, I don't dilute it. I haven't used anything but room temp water, but I will try hot water next time. Didn't even think about it.

for me, i just put some of the oil soap on a sponge like this (on the rougher side first). Lather it up, scub good enought to get the cosmoline and grime off. Do this 2-3 times as needed and then rinse it off good with a clean wet rag. I dont put the stock under running water and I did not let it soak.

you should never let anything water based "soak" into a stock.

if you use water with soap to clean a stock it should only be on a wet rag, not soaked or poured on and after scrubbing it should then be dried off right away.

especially a stock like these type 53's that have a very worn or non existant finish in some places.

soaking the wood will cause the wood to "wisk" as in cause the grain of the wood to rise which can give it a rough texture.
