I recently won a Remington Mod. 29 at auction. It probably hasn't been properly cleaned since 1930, so it's on the middle of a complete teardown. I finished up the forend this evening, and when removing the mag tube, this little piece of history came out:

Now, this particular gun is choked to Imp. Cyl. so I'll use it for pheasant and chukar which doesn't require a magazine plug.

Guess this means I need to buy a Mod. 11 to go with this.

I bet that guy still has all the labels on his mattresses too. :)
    Well, he's dead, soooo......

That said, whomever inherits my collection will never have to deal with the likes of this:

I'm going to venture a guess that the bolt was never pulled from this gun in its 93 years on this earth.

Here's the whole thing. I'll have to repair the stock at the wrist. I'll likely order one from Boyds for the meantime.

An interesting thing about this shotgun, the safety can be set to left-handed operation rather easily, which is fantastic as this is a bottom-ejecting successor to the venerable Model 10.

This sucker is smooth as silk. Striker-fired with no need for any sort of extra motion needed to move the pump handle. The only drawback is the Rube Goldberg machine that is the bolt. With no clear instructions to be found regarding the disassembly, I'm not even going to attempt a full teardown.

So two surprises, one good, one not so much. Please share your stock repair when you get around to it. Something I'd be interested in seeing.

I expected a pack of Chuckles and a couple Krugerrands.
Funny you mentioned finding Krugerrands. When I bought my house 30 years ago, it had never been wired for cable or even a TV antenna. So I was running coax from the basement to the attic when I found a couple of plastic cylinders near the disappearing stairwell. There was a lot of odd stuff stored up there so I didn't think much about it and threw them into my pocket.
After the work was done I opened the first cylinder to find a dozen Krugerrands. In all there were 25 that the deceased previous owner of the home had squirreled away up there. Like many in the days of the Carter administration he had purchased gold as a hedge against the run-away infation of the times. The closest I've come to hitting on the lottery.

I'll bet there are a lot of little caches of gold coins in people's houses.

I'm always joking about finding them when I do demolition, but I never have. Your story gives me hope.
