I have been asked to participate in a meeting with my state senator regarding gun control. Prior to the meeting I would like do do some homework, including statistics I could use against anti-gunners. Does anyone know where I obtain such info?

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Send Kevin Kelly (Delegate Allegany County) an email request - delegate.k.kelly@house.state.md.us.
I have en email from him that breaks down some numbers, like these he says are from FBI

    Pasted in from his email:
    MD#'s
MURDER BY: “RIFLES” vs. “HANDS, FEET and FISTS”
    2011 2 17
    2010 3 19
    2009 2 18
    2008 4 28
    2007 9 23
    2006 5 25
    2005 4 18
    2004 2 30
    Total 31 178

IN MARYLAND, “HANDS, FEET AND FISTS” HAVE ACCOUNTED FOR 5.74 TIMES MORE MURDERS THAN “RIFLES” DURING THE PAST EIGHT YEARS.

MURDER USING KNIVES AND RIFLES IN MARYLAND

ABOUT KNIVES AND RIFLES OF ALL TYPES

IN MD, from 2004 through 2011, rifles were used to murder 31 times, cutting instruments were used 503 times ... 472 more murders than with rifles of all types. (Source: FBI Uniform Crime Reports: Table 20). *

    ABOUT SEMI-AUTOMATIC RIFLES
(Characterized as assault rifles by some)

M1 Rifles have been owned by individuals since 1962. AR-15 Rifles have been owned by individuals since 1963.

Semi-automatic rifles (as are the above among many others) have been owned by tax paying, law-abiding Americans for over 100 years beginning in 1903 with a Winchester Rifle incorporating a 10 round magazine. The M1 Rifle, incorporating an 8 round magazine, was not adopted by the military until 33 years later in 1936. AR-15 Rifles with a 20 round magazine available were owned by individuals beginning in 1963, 5 years before the M16 Rifle (military “assault” version of the AR-15) was adopted as standard army issue in 1969.

Millions upon millions of semi-automatic rifles are owned by the American people and yet far more murders are committed using knifes than using rifles of all types.

    ABOUT HANDGUNS
Drug legalization, although politically unpopular, would stop much drug related crime which is the actual driver of many, probably most, murders by use of firearms in this country.

Murder total, rifles compared to hands, feet and fist

FROM THE FBI Uniform Crime Reports

    MARYLAND:

MURDER USING: RIFLES / HANDS, FEET and FIST
    2011 2 17
    2010 3 19
    2009 2 18
    2008 4 28
    2007 9 23
    2006 5 25
    2005 4 18
    2004 2 30
    Total 31 178

SOURCE: FBI UNIFORM CRIME REPORTS: TABLE 20

    http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/ucr

IN MD FROM 2004 THROUGH 2011 HANDS, FEET AND FISTS WERE USED 5 TIMES MORE FREQUENTLY TO COMMIT MURDER THAN WERE RIFLES. GIVEN A VALID NUMERICAL BASE, THE RATIO WOULD PROBABLY BE SIMILAR IN ALL STATES AND LIKELY HAS BEEN SINCE COLONIAL TIMES.

THE SIMPLE, BUT APPARENTLY UNACCEPTABLE, METHOD OF DRAMATICALLY REDUCING THE NUMBER OF MURDERS COMMITTED BY THOSE WHO USE FIREARMS IS DRUG LEGALIZATION.

You may wish to provide a printed copy of the Harvard Journal Article to those attending, the link is below.

    U.S. National Academy of Sciences

Those who support more gun legislation should produce at least some authoritative evidence refuting the findings of U.S. National Academy of Sciences.

“In 2004, the U.S. National Academy of Sciences released its evaluation from a review of 253 journal articles, 99 books, 43 government publications, and some original empirical research. It failed to identify any gun control that had reduced violent crime, suicide, or gun accidents.15

    15. CHARLES F. WELLFORD ET AL., NAT’L RESEARCH COUNCIL, FIREARMS AND VIOLENCE: A CRITICAL REVIEW 6–10 (2004). It is perhaps not amiss to note that the review panel, which was set up during the Clinton Administration, was composed almost entirely of scholars who, to the extent their views were publicly known before their appointments, favored gun control.” *

*Source: Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy, at page 654, Vol. 30 in an article titled: Would Banning Firearms Reduce Murder and Suicide?

You may need to copy and paste the link into your browser to read the document. http://www.law.harvard.edu/students/orgs/jlpp/Vol30_No2_KatesMauseronline.pdf

The Harvard article referenced above should be required reading for those who wish to have an informed opinion about Firearms legislation.

Invoke the murder by surgery statistics (Abortion). Comparing lives terminated by abortion (> 10,000/yr) to gun deaths (< 600/yr) makes it look absurd.

not md death stats, but the national ones are interesting.
    http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/dvs/deaths_2010_release.pdf

search the pdf for "firearm". Page 23 and 24 have the chart of firearm types of deaths. Here's some highlights nationally in 2010...

    total firearms deaths- 31,672

    Accidental firearm deaths- 606

    total suicides- 38,364
    suicides by firearm- 19,392

    total homicide- 16,259
    Firearms homicide- 11,078

    Drug induced deaths-40,393
    alcohol-induced deaths-25,692
    Motor vehicle crashes-35,332

oh, look at table 16 on pg 88....
    wow.jpg
....Is anyone going to point a finger at young black males and ask what is causing the violence? Of course not, so they'll come for guns instead of tackling the real issues.

Pg 116 has the death rates broken down by state.
