I let mine run out too. Was costing me too much money :) But I had everything I wanted as well and then some too. I was randomly audited one year when they were doing tons of C&R holders. Got to carry a hundred old rifles down the ladder out of the attic racks and down to the kitchen, and then back up again after. That was fun.

The buying of Milsurp from large distributors is at a low point.

Regular firearms that happen to be C&R eligible is a big as ever.

    True Dat.

But we're also up against a metric sh!t ton of on-sellers who won't sell to Marylandistanians. C&R eligible guns or not.

Their guns-Their rule, but very frustrating.

This downturn in the market may cause them to change their business practices. Remember, when MD went to the internal lock, many manufacturers said they wouldn't do it. The same goes for CA and now they have all sorts of CA compliant guns.

    Wait and see.

Although there've been many good points cited in support of non-renewal, I, in spite of the fact that I long ago amassed all the C&Rs I want, keep renewing for another, albeit less salient reason.
To wit: In some contexts, a C&R may provide an additional layer of legal protection against a(n unconstitutional) government lawyer intent on proving my lack of trustworthiness to keep/bear arms. Were I ever to find myself in the dock having to disprove a lawyer's assertion that the state finds me unqualified to possess a firearm, it's somewhat comforting to know that Uncle Sam may help to refute such a claim. But, as I'm not a lawyer, I could be wrong..

Why did you need to do that? I thought they only wanted to see the book during an audit?

As a licensee, you may be inspected once a year if BATFE wishes to do so. They may choose to inspect your bound book or collection or both. YOU have the option of doing the inspection at their office or your licensed premises. My experience many years ago was that, when they notified me that they wanted to do and inspection, I asked when they wanted me to bring my collection into their Baltimore office. They decided to just look at my book and I never heard from them again. ;)

^^^ This is why it's beneficial to periodically let the license expire. Then when you get the itch again, apply for another FFL-03. My current FFL-03 is almost a year old, but my bound book is almost empty because I've bought just one C&R firearm and sold none since I got it. That will be an easy audit when I take in my 3-ring binder with one entry on one page.

Addressing the OP's point, there is little reason not to have an FFL-03. $10/year is a low entry fee for the rights it restores and to be ready if an opportunity strikes.

Nope he matched every gun to the serial number in the book. Took us about two hours. They were doing a ton of 03-FFL's that year. This was right after Obozo got in and I'm sure some new appointee got all hysterical when they saw what the C&R license was.

    OP here...
That was put me over the edge. I renewed in 2014 even though the surplus market dried up. Now, as a MD subject, most other FFL's won't recognize my FEDERAL license.
From 2014-2017 I sold one C&R firearm and acquired zero. I was considering Yellowsled's Ballerina Molester, but that was my only serious (non GB) interest during a 3yr license period.

And you can still buy your C&R qualifying firearm without the license. It may cost a few pennies more, but unless things change before June 1st, mines going away.

As I sit here, I'm thinking what C&R firearm I'd be interested in buying. The only thing that comes to mind is an M1 Carbine. I don't know of anyone giving a discount on these rifles to a C&R license holder, so why keep the license?

    YMMV

Ooh! Ooh! I know this one!

So you can get that nice M1 Carbine you finally found from a willing seller in America shipped directly to your door and avoid the extra expense and hassle of having to fill out another 4473 and coordinate with and pay a local FFL.

You'll save $30 in gas, time, and transfer fees right there.

That sounds like a giant pain in the ass
