Depends on the surgery. He might not be getting a replacement. OP if it's a labral tear, hit me up. I have (too much) experience with that.

I used a walker for a couple weeks after my hip replacement back in May before transitioning back to my cane. Left hip replaced but my strong side is the right so as soon as I had finished with my oxycodone prescription I resumed carrying iwb on the right (& driving).

Meaning no disrespect and hoping for the best for your surgery... You won't be able to draw while using crutches. Now you're only worried about what happens while seated. How well can you draw while seated?

I never carried when I had my acl replaced. I'm still alive to tell about it
