I cannot stress strongly enough NOT to lay a safe on it's side and open the door, unless it has a damper or spring to prevent the door from slamming down. It only takes one slip for someone to lose multiple fingers.

Another thing to keep in mind is that most of these vertical safes depend on gravity to hold the door on the hinges. You can just lift the door off while the safe is open (makes it quite a bit lighter when moving the safe). If you open it while it's on its side and the door slips off... good way to lose a couple toes.

Rifles and shotguns muzzle up. Handguns with barrels horizontal in a safe mounted hanging pistol rack or with muzzle down in safe door pouch holsters.
