All of the basics have been covered above, one other thing to consider is adding an amplifier to your vehicle. 30 Watt amps can be had for cheap, and they do show up at the local hamfest.

Laurel does testing on the 3rd Saturday of the month at the Laurel Women's club, with the exception of Nov and Dec (we take those off), as well as at most of the local hamfests.

There's an active ATV group in Laurel with an ATV repeater.

That's one of the few ham things I haven't done, working though an ATV repeater. I knew a ham in Connecticut that ran a 429 MHz ATV repeater and was talking about putting one on 1270MHz just after the World Trade Center one was lost on 9/11.

How cheap? I know someone who bought one new for $100, which wouldn't be a choice for me since I could just get a new 2m mobile radio for $120

I've seen the 30 Amp version as cheap as $30 - $50 used.

Wow, pleasantly surprised to see so many hams on here.... Since the thread has been started, wondering if any of you have experience with the cheap Feidexan radios currently selling on eBay..... They seem to get good reviews on some of the websites but they're priced at about 1/3 of the popular brands..... Lot of EMS peeps on here too.... NREMT-P here.
