I've been looking into getting a P7 PSP and was wondering if anyone on here has one, or has done some research on them that can pass on the info that they learned.
I'm wondering what finish is the best, or if there is one that is better than the others. I'm also curious if there is anything I should look out for when buying one, such as known issues, "idiot marks", or anything like that.

I found some at HKParts.net - they have a few different finishes as well. I kind of like the Dark Earth style, but not a ton.

Are the prices they have listed pretty fair?

I own a commercial P7 (psp pattern) and a Feldjaeger p7m8. I love them. the finest factory-produced nine millimeter guns out there. accuracy is unparalleled in factory weapons. Both my guns are blued. I have debated getting the p7 hard chromed by Mahovsky after i wear the finish off of it (i carry it when I need something smaller than my customary 1911 4"). Chrome is durable. blue is original. in a shooter gun, it doesn't matter. in a carry gun, get it in hardchrome if the price isn't stupid.

the biggest thing in a p7 i've found is to inspect the gas system, chamber, and internals for wear signs. my p7 has had easily five thousand rounds through it since I purchased it. more before i got it. no parts breakage. they do need to be cleaned regularly though. the gas system starts to make noise when hand cycled after a period of firing.

i picked mine up at shows......hkparts (adam weber) has them as you note, but also check out HK specialist. my boss has transferred a few pistols from him and the prices are usually reasonable.

    Those prices are good.

I have 3 P7M8s. My ccw was hardchromed by Virgil Tripp when you could still get Virgil to hardchrome.

Hal at the armory has a psp in his case. its a little rough on the exterior. I'll take a look at the guts today. I cant recall what he's asking.

    Thanks for the heads up.

What do you guys think of this finish? I don't have a gun in the dark earth finish yet, and kind of like this one. It is taking some "growing" on me to be in love with it though.

It is $775. I feel comfortable paying that price. Is that a decent price?
The grade B blues are $650, premium are $725 and chrome is $775 (same as dark earth).
I plan on using it as a shooter like all of my other guns, so the finish has to be durable enough to shoot all the time and not wear out after a couple thousand rounds.

Mine came from HK Specialist and it was $549. Prices came way down when the German police trade ins hit the market. As they dry up, prices will rise accordingly. Some folks are willing to pay more for a nicer finish. I am not. To me, it's a tool that is going to get used hard and a pretty finish is just going to turn into a worn finish soon enough anyways. Besides, P7's are known for having a fragile finish because the steel is so hard (that's a good thing) that the bluing didn't stick well. Any real use wears it off quickly. As for wat to look for, make sure HK is marked as the importer. All of the ones that they imported were sent back to the factory for inspection. Any internal parts which showed even the slightest bit of wear were replaced and the pistol was returned to an "as new" condition when viewed from a mechanical standpoint. Exterior finish was left as is. The pictols were then graded according to cosmetic appearance as either Grade "A" "B" or "C". ALL are in equal condition as relates to function, quality, longevity of parts and reliability. The only difference is APPEARANCE. If it's marked with ANY other importer than HK, there is no telling what was done to a P7 prior to import. Regardless of cost, I recommend buying ONLY an HK import. I cannot stress that enough. Both HK Specialist and HKParts.net sell only HK imports. As for the P7 in general....IMO if God were to carry, it would be a P7. It is simply the best pistol I have ever or will ever own or shoot. The P7 needs periodic cleaning (every 500 rounds or so) or it WILL start to have reliability issues. For this reason, if society were to collapse tomorrow, I'd pick my Beretta, CZ, or HP because cleaning is optional with them. For all other occasions, the P7 wins without question. It's laser accurate, reliable as an AK and you really cannot wear one out. Plus it's German. What's not to love?

I'm a purist. P7s should be HC or blue. Diamond black also looks good.

Do you have a picture of the Diamond Black? I haven't heard or seen one like that.

I know what you mean about being a purist. I do kind of like the finish, but like I said, I'm not in love with it and have a feeling I'd be disappointed with it once I got it.
I'll probably save the dark earth finish for something like the M&P 9 or FNP 9.

Just the info I was looking for. Do you have any pictures of yours? I'd love to see what kind of finish I can expect.

I don't at the moment but I'll snap a few for you this evening if you would like. Keep in mind that it shows a fair bit more wear now than it did when I bought it. I use it alot!

I have a P7M8 finished in Robar's NP3. That finish has held up very well to the rigors of daily summertime carry, oftentimes in a salty environment. It looks great. Somewhere on this board are pictures of my HK with NP3 finish. Also on this board (again, somewhere) are pictures of a 1911 of mine, finished in Diamond Black. I prefer the look, wear, and ease of cleaning of the NP3 over the DB, but either one would be an excellent choice for your PSP.

Just back from the Armory. PSP sold. Sorry. I concur with combloc on the finish. Its a real pretty blue IN the box. As soon as you look at it, it'll start wearing. I like the HC look on a P7. Danny's NP3 also looks good. Its more grey and satin than the HC. I have 1 that has not been touched since it left Oberndorf. It sits in its box in my safe. My other is 98% in finish and I've shot it a few times. I prefer the M8 to the PSP, but the price will be higher.

Well I took a drive up to Gun Connection to look at my newest additions. The .45 police turn in looked great with night sights that looked good still. The Usp 9 had some engraving on the slide which I want toro thrilled about since I didn't know about it. I called Richardsons Trading Post on the way home ans he dropped the price $100, down to $450 since he want aware of it either. I definitely will do business with them again. That is pretty stand up in my book. Like Dan said, it'll be a great beater/ shooter, so no worries there especially for the price.

I am a huge fan of the P7 PSP, and I own two. One is an A grade that cost me $706 which is in 99% condition, and the second I bought from www.hkspecialists.com for $539 and then had it hard chromed for $150 by Mahovsky's. I used to carry my HK USPc .45, but after I bought my first P7, I switched to carrying it instead because of its simplicity and ease of concealment. I never thought that I would like a 9mm, but these are so accurate, reliable, and safe that I am sold on them.

This was my first C grade that I got from Top Gun Supply. Its slide was pretty beat so I had it refinished by CCR Refinishing in their Cera-Hide house black. Nice finish but the sharp edges did not hold the finish very long. I traded it to fund my A grade, but I regret selling it already.

Ok holeshot....I wanted to buy it for myself but I guess I let you in on it since My gun purchases for the next 5 months are spoken for. (gotta put that designated collector form through)
Last time I was there; Gus at (Industry Partner) Accurate Gun and Pawn had two P7s.
One was the dark earth. Something was ground off of the slide of the dark earth one and he had marked it down.
Not sure if its still there, but probably worth your time to call Gus and see.

I bought it as a Grade C. Actually, the pictures make the finish look slightly better than it is. It shows no finish on almost all of the edges and it's thinning on the back strap. Again, it had less wear when I bought it but I've used it quite a bit. The insides looked like new with almost zero wear. It was obviously carried but not shot. Notice that the markings on the frame are silver but the markings on the slide are orange/copper. For some reason, every P7 that I've seen close to this serial number exhibit the same detail. HK actually filled the stamps in with something so what you are seeing is not the metal underneath the finish. Instead, you are seeing some sort of filler on top of the metal exposed by the stamping. You can see where it is thinning in the serial # on the slide. Only HK would be this crazy meticulous. Notice the "DE" stamp. This was added just prior to import and was not filled in i.e. youare seeing the metal of the slide exposed by the stamp. This stamp has been law in Germany for some time now and denotes the country of origin or "DEutschland". Why this is necessary whin the slide is already stamped "Made in Germany" and has German police markings is beyond me. Obviously, the krauts have stupid laws the same as we do here! The import stamp appears to be etched somehow and not stamped. Anywho, enough praddle. I would buy a grade C again without hesitation. I can buy alot of ammo for that extra 200 bucks! Besides, I actually like the well worn look. Kinda' like preserved memories.
