Thing is they haven't slowed down after the election either, black Friday 2016 had the single day reccord, November set a sales reccord, December may too. I think what happened was an overall shift in culture since the AWB expired in 04, and accelerated by Obama's hatred of our rights. Guns are more mainstream, and there are more gun owners, and people that support gun ownership than there have been in the last few decades. Much of it has been driven by modern tactical rifles and concealed carry too, which benefits our rights greatly. Hopefully the rising sales, acceptance, and general shift in our favor is permanent, seems to prove the best way to get people to do something is tell them they can't.

In addition to what you've identified (highlighted in red), I think the development of first-person shooter video games has brought about interest in the younger generations, esp for action events like IDPA and 3-gun. They want to be able to shoot the real versions of what they've "shot" in the video games.
