    A S&W 610 using .40 S&W rounds isn't a bad idea, either. I ran a GP100 and a pre-Model 10 at a couple of IDPA matches, I really need to get the reloads down with the speedloaders.

See if you can find a plain old 686. A friend of mine has a 686 SSR and while it's nice, it's not almost 900 dollar nice!!!!!

Yeah but I hate stainless. I think I'm gonna save up about $600 and keep my eyes peeled for a 4" 586 or 19. I can do my own gunsmith work, of course. That factory SSR was neat but doing my own work is half the fun. :)

You could always get a 625, and run AR brass in SSR, then use ACP and moons in ESR. Both divisions with one gun.

I run a 686 SSR, in SSR. I worked over the action and it's a hell of a shooter now. I just bought a 625 for ESR but the way things are going I don't know when my background check will be done. Paperwork was filled out on 3/20.

Ok, I had seen a 625 JM before, and thought it was awesome... I just had forgotten that model number. Considering I have 4 other .45 ACP handguns that may really be the best bet! But I want a .357 Magnum as well.... hmmmm

Thanks for the ideas guys.

Boy, looking at the poll results it seems we either have 9 trolls or 9 people (with good intentions) who know nothing about IDPA revolver divisions answering questions about it anyway. Possibly a combination. 6 inch barrels are not legal in IDPA revolver divisions, folks.

That was my bad. I did not know 4.2" was the max. I would delete or close the poll if I could!

No worries. I think we had a decent discussion about it regardless. Hope anyone who read the posts got something out of it.
Oh hey, one more answer from your original post. 105 Power factor is required for SSR, which many off the shelf non +p .38 specials make. My favorite is Federal American Eagle with a 130 grain round nose FMJ. Most folks reload their ammo light. I've never seen someone run full power .357. I'd do it for a laugh maybe once, perhaps at a BUG match, but wouldn't make a habit out of it. I've heard of someone doing one match at AAFG with full house .44 mag. If he didn't already have it, he earned his "man card" that day...

There was a guy a few years ago at the state match at Sanners Lake that shot full power .357's.

When he got to the stage I was running and lit that thing off, me and the guy working with me looked at each other and at the same time said "no question he's making power factor there"!!!

I like Stainless since it doesn't require re-finishing if I want to have anything done to it. Bead blast and done for me.

You should be good to go for a 586 or 19 for 600 bucks. I would think.

Plus you wont wear the finish off of a stainless gun. I'm polishing the cyl. of my 686, and I'm using my holster and dry fire practice to do it. :party29:

I really like the look of a blued revolver. I understand it will wear but all my favorite guns have wear/use marks but it gives them character. I'm not totally opposed to SS but it's never my first choice.

I'm waiting for a Python that has a horrible ring around the cylinder because it will be less desirable and less expensive. I don't care, if I get one I'm shooting the crap out of it!

Some of you are over thinking this. A K frame smith is ideal for SSR, and get the SafariLand speed loaders. You will need 3 two on strong side and one on the other (or behind the holster if you prefer). I like kydex for holster and holders as the draw is slick, but leather is fine. I like the sights on the Mod 19 (and 66), so used them but a model 10 is fine as well. Used these old police trade ins can still be found for under $300, and shoot way better than they generally look.

For ESP the 625 is the default setup, moon clips are a bit faster than speed loaders, although with practice it is only about 1 sec difference. I really liked the K frames better than the N so preferred to shoot SSR.

Now that I shoot three gun I use my CZ for IDPA, but may dig out the revolvers for some fun.

I am going to Chantilly tomorrow, I will keep your advice and that of others above in mind. I am on a modest budget and $300-500 is what I want to spend. Even a beater with a few issues I can fix myself would be fine. I know what to look for in terms of safety and proper operation, I've worked on dozens of Smith revolvers.

As far as shooting them.... well that's why we're in this thread. :) thanks again!
