FWIW, here is a gas key supplied, installed, and staked by Chad some years ago. I maintain my opinion that the main intent for staking an AR/M16 gas key is to hold broken screw heads in. The gun will, soon enough, stop running at this point, so you will usually know right away that something is amiss.-

As for the gas key finishing, I'm not too worried as long as the port is chrome lined and the correct diameter. The rest is cosmetic. The only unknown is the interface between the carrier and the gas key itself. As long as the screws hold up to a reverse 31 in/lbs turn, and the gun runs as it should, then I wouldn't worry too much about it.
