Geographic location?

I'm not sure if this is the right forum but why is it where I live defines how safe/smart I am with firearms and dictates what I can and cannot own? How come the neighboring states trust their citizens with firearms to point that they can choose what they can purchase?

I guess frustrated is what I am with maryland.
