Flying in at Reagan with checked long gun

I have a .22lr rifle that I've kept at my in-laws in Louisana that I woul like to bring home - current residence is Md.

I was planning to bring it as checked luggage, locked, proper case etc.
I assume this is straight forward given I land in Va, no issues checking into with the airline.

Is this be anything to potentially concerned about as?

Put an apple airtag in the case/checked luggage. If the off chance of the airline loses the gun case.

Would it be easier (cheaper) to have the local ffl ship to your local ffl? Unless you already have a TSA approved shipping container. Checked baggage can be rather expensive too.

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated.
It sounds like the better option is to ship via ffl - which is no problem, I just have to find a local one.
Like mentioned, that would be the cheapest option as I would have to buy a proper case and locks and then pay for checked luggage.

Federal law says he can mail it to himself. When I was hunting out West, most of the guys I knew just sent it to the hotel they were staying in and sent it to their home when finished. Long guns only.

If this is indeed an option, then this is the route I'll go. That would be the easiest and for sure the cheapest.

Jumping in late to say the same: it is completely legal to mail this rifle to yourself, assuming it’s legal for you to posses in MD. You really just need to follow the rules of the specific shipping company.

I've flown in/out of DCA with a checked handgun. Here's my advice...

1. Drive around, not through.
2. Arrive AT LEAST two hours early. I was escorted from the check-in counter to a special area and had to wait until inspectors opened and cleared my firearm/case as safe.
3. Make sure you have a case that locks on both corners.
4. If you pack your ammo in the same case, make sure its in the factory box or otherwise safe container, and not rattling about or loose.
5. Enjoy your firearm at your destination! Once you fly with a firearm, you'll see how easy it can be with just a little prep and a good container. Allowing for extra time is the biggest thing.

I'm late to the party but I got bounced from checking a case with 60 pistols, rifles and shotguns in Fla. a couple of years ago, and ended up driving them to my destination weeks later. Probably a good thing.
