I spent nearly 20 years as a military firearms instructor, live ammo was never allowed in class. The instructor never carried ammo. I know of no mishaps while I served. Rules have a reason, don't brake the rules and nobody gets hurt. Really bad way to learn a lesson.

This is one of the reasons students are not allowed to bring their personally owned guns into my classes. I provide everything they need until we hit the range.

It's sad and inexcusable that his negligence led to an innocent's life being cut short.

So the instructor was guilty of not checking the students firearm to ensure it was clear. I get that and it's a shame someone died because of that mistake, but the student should also be held accountable IMO, everyone should know by now to make sure their firearm is clear before handling it.
