So, like many of you, I used the weather this weekend to my advantage. I got my mom, dad, fiancee, lots of guns, rebar, steel, and PVC together and hit the range Saturday morning. We shot at the Patuxent Wildlife Refuge during the MNHA membership shoot. We were shooting paper targets at 10 and 15 yards and hanging steel at 25, 45, and 70 yards. It was really just a fantastic morning.
Over the last year and a half, my dad has really taken to firearms as my brother and I immersed ourselves. Other than 5 rounds of 22LR when he was a little kid in India, he never fired a gun until 2016. Now he can't wait to get to the range with me every month. He recently got a 9mm Hi-Point carbine for home defense and spent a lot of the morning getting familiarized with it. Up until now, he's really only shot a little 22LR Rough Rider revolver and a few blasts out of my various other guns, so he really had a fun time hitting targets with substantially more authority. It was great showing him how it all worked and helping him improve his form. Definitely was one of those full-circle moments.
My mom shot probably all of 20 rounds the whole morning. She's the type who enjoys watching A LOT more than actually shooting. She can manage 22LR fine in a pistol or rifle, but much more than that and she would rather just spectate. I did get her to fire off a few 38SPL rounds from my S&W 686+ and some 38R through my dad's Nagant revolver though. And she even shot my Glock 29 once. Probably the first and last time she ever shoots that particular gun...
And my fiancee was there keeping me on my toes. Her family is from Mississippi and she's been shooting since she was a kid. Mostly 22LR and 20GA shotguns, but she has a much longer history with guns than I do. So as you might expect, she's not a bad shot. In fact, she pretty much kept pace with me and even landed a 70 yard offhand shot with my Mosin before I did *grumble*. She spent most of her time shooting my 300BLK AR, Mosin, and S&W 686+. Really not a fan of the smaller calibers, this girl. She even managed to handle 10mm pretty well, but my 180gr Underwood load was over the line for her.
I spent most of the morning shooting my Glock 29 and 300BLK AR. I got pretty damn good at ringing steel at 45 yards with my G29. Honestly, that was insanely gratifying. I was a little worried 10mm would be too much for me, but man was it fun. And really not bad. I mean, sure there's recoil, but I'd argue managing it is all about proper grip. You don't have to be Herculean to control it. But anyways, when I wasn't doing that, I was helping my dad out and competing with my girl with whatever she was shooting at the time. Just one of those picture-perfect mornings.
If someone told me that my main family activity would one day be shooting, I would have laughed in their face. None of my parents' friends or family get it, but it's just a wholesome family activity no matter how you look at it. Some families go out to dinner, some go to movies, but we go to the range and it gets us all closer together. I wouldn't trade it for anything and I wish the antis could see the positive aspects of gun ownership. "Gun culture" doesn't need to be a derogatory term.
