Anyone have any experience (success/disaster) messing with the extractor in your 1911, to resolve failures to extract (and resultant double-feeding)?

I have a brand new Rock Islandsouble stack 9mm 1911 and it is double feeding something awful.

Before replacing the extractor (with ????) I thought I’d see if some judicious bending has any positive effect.

I’m going to peruse Kuhnhausen’s Manuals this evening but, thought I’d also inquire here.

    Thanks in advance!

If it's new I'd get with RI' customer service.

My 1990 Era Springfield 1911A1 GI developed extraction issues over time and eventually I replaced the extractor. The length of the claw on the new one was like .002 longer and that fixed the issue.

    Good luck.

You most likely need to tune, not just increase tension, the extractor. All you want to know..thread on why and how to. If you like 1911’s..this is the site.

Thanks! Heading out to the back deck and recliner to go there now; I cracked open Book # 1 of Kuhnhausen’s, “1911, A Shop Manual” and was reminded there are at least 3 surfaces of the “claw” end that have to be dressed to specific angles …

First step will be seeing how much tension the case is under …

Thanks - I have a new extractor on the way from Brownells as it is likely my bending it won’t correct the issue.

If it were more serious I’d involve CS but, I’ll be dismayed if I can’t get it resolved quicker on my own.

The real challenge - as always - is time!

Most 1911 extractors have to be bent to get the propertension. There are shims that are used with a trigger pull gauge that give you a pull number of pounds to adjust to.

In some cases, I have had to relieve the boss in the middle of the firing pin as well.

Kuhnhausen “1911, A Shop Manual, Volume 2” and the 1911 Redux pdf’s are my constant companions…

Tuning the extractor and switching to a Wilson combat magazine fixed my SAMmy. I also polished the feed ramp, fwiw.

Dude. I’m literally having the exact issue with a RIA 1911 that is also new. Looking forward to your solution.
