Handwritten on a yellow sticky on the inside lid of 50 rd MTM box. Fired brass goes back in box in the same row it came from. This gets marked at the range if any shot not recorded on chrono, e.g. a row of 5 with one chrono missing would be marked with a "4."

The only brass that gets marked with a sharpie is the infrequent case that has something wrong with it, e.g. gets overtrimmed, overbumped, or the primer went in hard and needs a better swag or ream of crimped primer pocket. These might get used as fouling shots until the problem is corrected, depending on what it is.

Every round I load has a number etched on the case, and is marked with a magic marker when loaded. Inside each box of loaded ammo is a recipe card with the load data for each round for each loading. (Full load details are kept in composition notebooks in my reloading room.) The case etching facilitates tracking of individual cases through their life cycle, even when many cases at a time are put through ultrasound or hot SS pin tumbling cleanings.

And preemptively - in the past I have had posters (who have never done this and have no idea what they are talking about) comment on how this surface etching weakens the brass and is dangerous. I have literally been doing this on cases from the 21 Fireball to 6.5x300WWH for decades with no indication of any weakening or even any effect at all on case strength.

I just use freezer bags and write the info in the label of the bag. This serves at two things one there are lots of space on the bag and second the bags are airtight preventing moisture and other intrusions.
