Staggering the rings is unnecessary BS.
Your gun will operate with only one gas ring in place.

But they are a wear item.
Your gun will not operate properly if they are worn down and not sealing the bolt into the carrier.
Remove cam pin and firing pin. Then turn your BCG upside down.
If the bolt falls out under it's own weight then you need new rings.

Your rings should last thousands of rounds.
Some people replace them routinely around 5k.
You could probably just shoot until they fail.
They do occasionally break or disintegrate all on their own.
That's why there's three of them; redundancy.

Yea Really no big deal I stagger mine fire a few hundred rounds never an issue Take out the bolt and there it is rings are lined up So take it with a grain of salt The important part is later after firing many rounds is to check for a good seal This is called the bolt carrier ring test Probably not the right name but you extent the bolt all the way out from the carrier This is completely assembled when doing this place the bolt and carrier upright on a table if the bolt holds the weight of your carrier the rings are good if the bolt goes into the carrier under it's own weight the rings need to be replaced. You can google pics of this test

Just remember this test may or may not work with the Mcfarland ring and most likely will not work with AR10 bcg's due to their heavier weight.
