i tried searching for a thread i saw on this before, and couldn't find it, as far as whats the same, and whats different 9mm ammo, like 9x19, 9mm parabellum, 9mm luger and so on. i'm thinking about getting a 9mm semi auto, and i just wanna know what is the same, and what the 9mm ammo is that isn't the same as the others, i'm talking dimensionally. if you have the link to that thread you can just link it. thanks

The majority of modern 9mm handguns are chambered in 9x19 which is also known 9mm Luger, 9mm parabellum, and 9mm NATO.

Soviet 9mm guns are usually chambered in 9x18 aka 9mm Makarov

Then you have 9x17 which is typically called .380 in the US, but also goes by 9mm Kurz.

There are other more rare 9mm calibers as well but the 3 I've listed are the only common ones.

Keep in mind that we are not a metric country.
Cartridges developed in this country are conventionally sized in decimal fractions of Imperial units.
Our .308 Winchester is 7.62 x 51mm to our NATO friends.

.308 Winchester has a different SAAMI spec than 7.62x51 NATO. We call the military round 7.62x51 NATO. The same goes for 5.56x45.

To the OP, about a month or two ago, someone asked almost the same question. We came up with at least 10 and maybe 20 different 9mm cartridges. BTW, the 9mm, aka "9mm Luger", uses a bullet that is .355" diameter. The Soviets with their own wisdom designed a bullet that is .363 or 9.22mm. Most of the Western designed 9mm rounds use a .355" bullet.

As does .223 Remington but they remain equivalents.

    This.

And.....9x17 is also known as 9mm Browning and 9mm Court as mentioned by mark 75H. There is also 9x21 IMI (Israeli military industry I believe). Then theres 9x23 Largo that yellowsled mentioned. Then 9x25mm Dillon which is a 10mm necked down to 9mm. :)

P.S. Parabellum means "For war" if im not mistaken.

    Don't forget .357SIG then either. 9mm bullet in a .40cal case.

Theres also a few .45 necked down to .38 like .38/45 Clerke, .38/45 Hardhead and .38 Casull. But I think the OPs question has been more than answered ;)

Not exactly a 40cal. Case but close enough. If you were to neck down a 40 s&w case it wouldn't work. It would be too short.

I know, I just meant that the case is .40 in diameter necked to a 9mm.

I think we've all probably now confused the op more than he was to start with, haha.

Hell I'm confused. We can use all this different types of 9mm rounds though right?

Weapons: Benelli M2 and FNH FNX-9 Marine Corps: M4 With Trijicon sight and PEQ-16
