I am signed up to receive emails from the DNR .They post upcoming potential changes in some laws.Today I read where they want to legalize cut bait in nontidal waters. We have been doing that for years and never once thought it was illegal to do so.
I do know using cut bait has always been outlawed for trot lines and bush bobs but didnt know it was forbidden for hook and line

I thought the notice was they were considering making cut bait of certain legally harvested fish illegal?

I think this only refers to which fish you may use as cut bait. So basically any fish that does not have a size limit, ie, yellow perch, can be used as cut bait to catch other fish. So if you want to use white perch as bait you would be free to do so.

There are two issues being brought forth. One is allowing cut bait in non-tidal waters (which I doubt any of us knew was illegal) and prohibiting certain types of fish to be used as bait (bass, trout, etc.).

Thank you for posting this. I did not know about invasive catfish, either. Only invasive fish species I ever heard of in recent memory was the Snakehead.

Learn something new everyday. I am sure just like others I've been using cut bait since I was a kid on the upper potomac to catch catfish.

When I was in high school we fished off of Ft. Belvior at what was called The Point, Southern entrance to Dogue Creek. We would use worms to catch Perch and then put them on a big hook, through their backs, and catch catfish.
