Wrapped the tire around the wheel and clamped it in place to find were I need to cut it a 1/2" short so it will shrink fit on the wheel. cut a V shape and filled in the V with weld then cleaned up the weld

Heated up the tire with a ROSE BUD tip in tell it was real hot. Hot enough to just scorch the wood but not red hot. that expanded it enough so that can be beat down around the wheel and when it cools it shrinks on tite. one tire went on eazy the other one I had to beat the crap out of it to get on but it came out nice.[ like my safety shoes? and I did pick up the hose off the rim and held it off wile heating.]

Heating the steel tire so it expands to fit the wheel is genius, but how do you get it off again, if you get a flat? :D

Who knew steel tires would be such a hot topic on MDS?

One more question. How did you determine that you needed to cut the tires 1/2" short and they would expand enough to fit on the wheel when heated?

I thought tire shrinker was a joke until I watched the vid I figured you would just cut out a small piece and forge weld it back together. But I guess if that was your trade it would pay to have one of those shrinking machines to save time

A guy I talked to years ago that made wood wheel told me about 9/16 to cut out so to be safe I went 1/2" kind of a gustoment. The tire shrinker is cool ,near seen one.
