I was at the range today and as I was leaving a guy walked in with a Windham lower. I happen to over hear him asking an employee about changing the butt stock. According to him the tube on his rifle is commercial and is factory. It came with a fixed stock that he was changing out for a magpul adjustable stock. He stated the new stock was also commercial size, however it would not fit on the tube. I didn't say anything cause I didn't want to be that guy. Lol. Anyways I was thinking maybe he got the wrong stock or is it possible the tube was designed to only accept a fixed stock. Anyone have better knowledge regarding buffer tube design?

A fixed stock (in my mind) would mean a rifle stock (A2, etc.).

In which case, yeah it's going to be difficult to attach a carbine stock to a rifle buffer tube.

Sorry I should have been more clear, I see what your saying though. I mean the type stock that looks like an adjustable stock but it's fixed in one position. The buffer tube look the same. I'm sorry but don't know the exact term used to describe said stock.

    Ah, a pinned carbine stock.

They could've pinned a commercial or mil, at that point it's just easier to chuck it all and pick up a replacement buffer tube and stock.
