I guess a concern might be erosion over time of the gas tube hole but gas ports on barrels open over time as well.

Kind of an all or nothing fix and how many different tubes will you have to buy before you're happy with the results? I'd buy an SLR adjustable gas block and never worry again. My 2¢

There is always the option to order undersized and open it up for tuning. I do have an SLR but it adds a lot of little parts to the system. However, for those with a FSB or don't want to change the gas block is tuned gas tube a viable option?

I agree with starting with the smallest gas hole and opening it up. The thing is, if you only shoot mil spec ammo, that'd probably work for you as there are only a handful of different types you will be faced with. But, if you want a gun that will handle the MANY commercial brands/types of ammo that are out there, I would either keep the gun over gassed (guaranteeing it will eat just about everything you feed it) or find a practical way to tame the gas up or down.
