I want to point out that the antis stupid ideas of peeing/pooping to deter attackers is more stupid than Stupid for the basic biological fact that adrenaline often creates "combat mode" where the body switches off certain functions, ie you get constipated and your kidneys slow down. However your arms and hands and trigger fingers still work, even if you also get "jelly legs". I'm surprised the antis haven't gone as far as saying you should get vampire fang tooth crowns and bite your attacker.

As to states like MD denying my natural right to self defense by removing my defensive options- well I could rant for the next 10 years solid on that one! Too bad assholes like Frosh and OweMalley would just call me a nutcase for even a 1 minute lucid rant... I really hate sociopaths in power, and people with the inability to think logically and with facts. And yeah, like Gansler's long gun open carry will go over well in this state- will he assure me 100% that I can carry my PS90 without LEO harassment?

I suggest both of you take the Utah CCW class - I suggest Mid-Atlantic Firearms (Bryan Fletcher - no I don't know him personally but I took his course and I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express the other night), his no. is 410.796.7715, or www.midatlanticfirearmstraining.com. He occasionally teaches at Free State Range in White March (also a good resource) but does other areas. As stated above the Utah non-resident CCW will cover you in any state you will be hiking in except the People's Socialist Republic of Merryland - when in western Merryland you are expected to call 911 and wait for assistance :( f you don't have firearms make a decision and purchase them now, carry on your hike, be more comfortable you can protect yourself (no one else will be around) and enjoy.

Backpacking is about moving you and your stuff down the trail. A firearm seems a one trick pony when most everything else is pulling double duty and light as possible. I have never felt an issue on the AT. I have had concerns regarding people off the AT in WV, Pisgah NF, and the Massanuttens. That being said I have a Utah permit. SA weighs less than DA revolvers.

Hyp, have you found a good solution yet? I use either a Safariland ALS holster with a UBL drop attachment or a Wilderness Safepacker looped around the waist strap of my pack. I prefer the Safariland set up for access, but it is more visible.

We are both going to pursue the Utah CC class to cover us in sensible states. So far as trail carry, I think I am going to consider the "kit bag" shown earlier in this thread.

I thru-hiked (entire trail in one season) the AT in 2011 and didn't carry a firearm. In 6 months of hiking I had only one potential problem.

I do know a young lady who carried during her entire thru-hike. She carried in a fanny pack that was always with her. I don't recommend this in the AT states that you don't have a permit to carry in.

For more info on hiking the at go to whiteblaze.net

    Enjoy your hike!

OOOOH 2 females in the woods alone, so where uh..... do you think you might be campin? Whatcha gonna wear?

The problem with that joke is that women never find it funny...think of your sister or mother hearing that.

It either disgusts them or scares them. Might want to learn that before you get punched in the head from a husband/brother/father...or before they shoot you thru the tent as you unzip it.

Yeah, I enjoyed their take on it as well. :sad20: Don't even bring mace... evil stuff it is. Just catch up with a large group... except if there isn't one... well... maybe throw books at the guy. Or pencils. Yeah. Those will work.

I am going to look into a Utah CCW permit. That will solve a good deal of my issues.

Carry a bottle of syrup of ipecac at the ready. If you encounter trouble, take a swig. It will help you to defensively vomit all over him/it.

If you really want to be prepared for anything, carry a squirt bottle filled with urine.

Who needs a firearm when you have bodily fluids available? They're even biodegradable.:sad20:

Do not carry on the AT. It's illegal.

I am an avid backpacker - check out my web site in my signature. I will very rarely carry a gun on the trail. I carry bear spray, which is just as good on two legged creatures as it is for four. Get the holster for the bear spray canister and use a carabiner to attach it to your chest strap so it's always ready.
