I can't imagine ever having use for them personally, this is more of a curiosity post. I never see them mentioned anymore in the gun community. Are they still used in the military?

I use them. Keeps debris out of the barrel...use them on shotguns as well for the same reason. They may not actually make a difference but they don't hurt anything either.

Had one on my A2 in the Marines...was supposed to shoot off with the first shot...it didn't and melted to the flash hider. Wound up cutting the melted plastic off with a knife... After the shooting stopped.

I put tape over my M/L muzzle, just to keep water out. ARs? Are bird cages still a thing???

I use them when I store for extended periods of time, I got a box of 20 or so at a surplus store for $5 years ago.

"Finger Cots" and unlubricated condoms also work as well.

I use a lot of the old canvas GI ones with the snap.
The vinyl plugs of the type that are used for vacuum tee's you can find at the hardware store for everything that doesn't have a front site post to accommodate the strap.
They're still a thing and cheap insurance for a mis-hap for some folks I guess.

12 gauge shot shells fit great if you don’t have a muzzle device.

I have a rifle that lives standing on its muzzle in a corner that I use a muzzle cap on. If it ever comes out of its corner, I doubt anyone will notice the cap. Nothing else capped though, I believe free air circulation is better to prevent corrosion.

I just cut the fingers off of rubber gloves and slide the cut finger over the muzzle/flash hider.
