    Maybe he's just tired of having to work with self-destructive, narcissistic, idiots and has something else better to do with his life.
    His timing is destructive to his constituents, party, and country. And it seems out of character for him.

    Was he compromised/blackmailed?

    I think that a short career in public service was once admirable. Today it’s a thankless headache and unless you are willing and able to find ways to broker influence for personal gain, the juice isn’t worth the squeeze. An intelligent person can have more positive impact and influence on society working for profit in the private sector.
