Not hard, but it does require a fair amount of jigs/tooling to make your life easier. If you are handy you can make many of the tools yourself, or improvise.

I'd recommend purchasing a receiver, since rolling your own doubles the amount of effort and tooling required and can't be fully heat treated at home.

Buying a kit with a headspaced barrel (AK Builder sells these now) is the easiest way to start. Most of the critical work is pressing on all the components and drilling holes. The rest is just riveting.

EDIT: Just realized this thread was from three years ago :D

I've got a full set of tools and a press looking for a home, never used,if you decide to get into it.

I sent mine off to midcounty. I decided that rivets were not my thing.

Might make an offer after this build --- hopefully I didn't bite off more than I can chew.

Are there even any affordable AK kits out there anymore?

I'd love to build an AK, after doing an AR - but I can't see spending more $$$$ on a kit, plus a flat, plus all the necessary parts and tools, than it would cost just to buy one outright.

That's just insulting. So don't ship the substandard bullet-sided mags here. But claiming that the rifle parts themselves are illegal in MD... :mad54:

I've gotten the box 'o 74 parts from SG before, and you're not saving anything over Apex or Whatacountry or Copes or the various board buys. Go with a legitimate parts dealer.

Unfortunately the reason to build an AK is not to save a buck anymore... but to get something you couldn't buy in a store. By the time the parts and tools are figured in you are approaching a professionally built rifle. Right now there are still plenty of 74s out there for cheap. Get a built rifle or at least a Saiga and do a conversion.

Ill have some AK parts for sale in the next week or so. Off the top of my head i know i have a AMD 65 parts kit, and 2 barrels. I also have some parts for a MPI-69 (german ak .22lr trainer). Ill be selling these at reasonable prices.

Looking forward to seeing what you got. Might have to get the AMD and a barrel if I have the coin.

Ill dig thru the parts tonight. The 2 barrels are suppose to be new and they look it, both are 16 inches. For the MPI-69 i have 4 mags, bolt, recoil spring, and maybe a few other minor parts.
