Hunting wild hogs to control the population is probably just as effective as hunting is for controlling the population of black tailed prairie dogs in the Midwest states.

It isn't effective at all. The estimated population of black tailed prairie dogs is something like 22 million. Varmint shooters aren't even putting a dent in it.

If true it won’t be long before they are state wide.

There is an army base, I believe it’s army. Maybe joint… between the hills on the big island, Hawaii. back In the mid/late 90’s, driving across the mountains, we saw a huge hog dead on the side of the road. Near some kind of vehicle crossing.

id say that thing was at least 400#. Sure hope it was something big and green that hit it, as opposed to a personal car. I’d guess they’re still there and probably thriving.

I first heard about them in Hawaii. They rut in the ground, disturb the ground cover and the soil washes off the volcanic substrate and covers the coral near the shore killing it. Kinda like silt flowing out into a delta.

Can you shoot feral hogs in Hawaii?

Hawaii. Feral Hunting: Yes – feral hog hunting is permitted on the islands of Maui, Molokai, Oahu, and Kauai, but not the island of Lanai. Hunting Licenses: Resident: A hunting license for hunting wild hog is required, and can be bought for $10.

Can I shoot a wild hog in Florida?

Wild hogs may be trapped and hunted year-round with landowner permission. A hunting license is not required, and a permit is not required to take wild hogs at night with a gun and light with landowner permission. Hunters may use dogs and any legal rifle, shotgun, crossbow, bow, pistol or air gun (including airbow).

I also read that hunting them is not very effective for reducing their numbers. They are smart and will evade hunters. Trapping then shooting works best.

Over to the woodlands/Pete Gum the other side of Seaford there was a hog running around about two weeks ago.
It was spotted and reported on channel 47 I think it was by concerned residents.
I dont know why I didn't remember it but I saw it briefly on a job we were on.
More than likely it was just a pet that turned feral or something.
Some were going on about it today elswhere and it all of the sudden had tuskers going on but I cant recall if that was actually the case for what I witnessed.
No,not Md but close enough to not worry about it if your familiar with the area.

Man, I thought this was going to be a very different thread.
Ive heard St Mary's has them. There have also been reports of them in Calvert County and out near Cumberland.
Near Cumberland makes sense. Contiguous with Bedford County, PA. The population there supposedly were founded by escapees of a hunting preserve that offered "wild boar" hunts.

2-3 years ago a lady called into Elliot in the Morning on DC101 for this topic. She had wild hogs in her yard often. Newburg Bel Alton area, Charles Co. I have not heard of any in Calvert until this thread.

Many states have 'recreational use' statutes where the farmer is not liable unless he charges for the privilege. Also, if you give someone a written permit you can set insurance requirements and where he can hunt. But then, the hunters are the problem too in that they want to 'hunt' not perform depredation control.

The truth is that in an environment of unlimited food like continuous farmland, hunting is not an effective management strategy. Some states have found that paradoxically hunting appears to increase populations. Once guides and lease payments get involved you suddenly have a group of landowners who have an interest in 'more piggies' as that is what attracts the hunter money. Just follow hunt reports where people are 'fined' for shooting sows, kept off parcels for the population to recover and other signs rhat those operations are managing their pigs for abundance not depredation Control.
Yeah, tell that to the passenger pigeon, bison and the once-endangered whitetail deer populations.

This looks like fun ...feral pig hunting from a helo above and outfitted with automatic weapons.

That reminds me of the "safari" in the movie "Black Hawk Down," which in turn reminds me of my Green Beret nephew telling me about putting together a hog hunting trip as an actual good-will mission for an area where he was deployed. They went out and killed a whole bunch of them, took them back to a village where they brough in everyone from the nearby area, and pit-roasted them for a big feast. They also ate some at the feast, but whatever was leftover was split up and taken back to the villages.

Buddy called me the other day to join him on a hunt in TN, but I couldn't make the trip (not enough notice). The one he killed on his way to the stand on day 1 went about 550lbs..

550lbs!! That’s a lot of bacon and pork chops……I’d like to do a hog hunt for sure. Would have to buy a bigger freezer though.
